Georgia's Macon brings to mind less hurried times, where cotton plantations pre-dating the Civil War await alongside 5,500 other National Register historic structures in 11 historic districts. Collegiate atmosphere prevails through presence of Mercer University, enhancing Macon's role as civic educational hub for central Georgia, and endowments from old-line families provide many cultural attributes typically enjoyed only in larger metropolitan areas. The Grand Opera House on Mulberry Street has one of the largest stages in the south, hosting performers from Sarah Bernhardt to Houdini. Rich and diverse, Macon area attractions range from 10,000-year-old Native American Indian mounds and a treasury of artifacts at the Tubman African American Museum to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Cannonball House & Museum, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1853, stands as the only house in Macon struck by a cannonball during Stoneman's raid in 1864. Sidney Lanier Cottage, birthplace for the famed Old South poet and musician, showcases his writings and the wedding gown of his bride. Shoppers head for the Peach Festival Outlet Center, Tanger Factory Outlet Center, and the Windmill Variety Mall or to dozens of shops, boutiques, galleries and antique stores. Golf, tennis, and biking trails await, with day trips out of Macon including Pine Mountain, Callaway Gardens & Warm Springs, Six Flags Over Georgia and the Museum of Aviation. Dining options range from gourmet to grits, with options for dining and dancing or taking in live music. Macon lodging, in a trio of districts, includes more than 50 hotels with more than 4,500 rooms.
